A Source of Pride (& Prejudice)

"Do not consider me now as an elegant female intending to plague you, but as a rational creature speaking the truth from her heart."

Recently, I prepared answers for commonly asked questions in job interviews. And, there was one that really stumped me:  What achievement are you most proud of, in the last 6 months?

If I had just graduated college this would be easy : my thesis, charity work, even my diploma.
But, since graduation the victories have been ... smaller.

My answer was that I'm most proud of finishing Pride and Prejudice.
I had been on a reading rampage after returning from South America, and I might have been a bit over ambitious (I believe my exact words were "I can read anything!"). I wanted to read more classic literature, since my boyfriend gives me a hard time about reading Chick-Lit and books staring a teenage wizard fighting the dark lord.

So I bought the pretty Penguin Classics version, to motivate myself, and it took me nearly 4 months to read the first one hundred pages. I fell asleep reading it on the bus. Twice.

Things started moving when I finally figured out the difference between Mr. Bingley and Mr. Bennett. And, it was all worth it for Darcy and Elizabeth's big moment.

"In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you"

I actually squealed! It's reminded me about how rewarding it is to stick with something until the end. I think they call that "accomplishment."

What have you done in the last 6 months that makes you proud?

  1. Today I took up the carpet in the dining room - now my muscles have that pleasant "I've just accomplished something" ache.

  3. I moved to a place where I knew no one, and somehow in 6 months have found myself at home within a a small community. I am proud of myself for sticking through the hard parts of the journey, in order to reap the beautiful rewards.

  5. Erin wow! you definitely get the trump card with manual labor. You are awesome.

Molly I'm not going to lie, if it wasn't for the pretty cover I probably would have quit. I agree, it makes all the difference!

Lindsey That is truly something to be proud of! Homesickness can be a hard thing to shake. I really think 6 months is the magic number anywhere - it was definitely the turning point for me when I went away to college.
