"And we will be ready, at the end of every day we will be ready, will not say no to anything, will try to stay awake while everyone is sleeping, will not sleep, will breathe deeply all the time, breathe in the air full of glass and nails and blood, will breathe it and drink it, so rich, so when it comes we will not be angry, we will be content, tired enough to go, gratefully, will shake hands with everyone, bye, bye, and then pack a bag, some snacks, and go to the volcano..."

I like that. Kind of reminds me of the Tale of the Three Brothers in Harry Potter, how the third brother, on his last day, greets Death as a friend.
ReplyDeleteNerd moment. :)
Dave Eggers is rad. He came to my class when I was in college and took all of our questions for two hours. Really cool guy and loved Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.

I'm in love with this quote - thank you for sharing. It's exactly what I needed to read today.
ReplyDeleteGina : I love Harry Potter and that is such a great comparison! I think this quote is great, not just because of what it says about the end of the world.
ReplyDeleteI think we should feel like this at the end of every stage in our lives - that we got every experience out of it that we could and we are ready for something new.
Alexa : that is so cool! I am always the most star struck around authors. You should have seen me at the Nicole Krauss reading, ha!
