on the Equals Record | An Indefinite Season

tree, redefined
first fall in New England
I'm very excited to share my collaboration with the Equals Record, an online publication "devoted to pursuing meaning through topics of timely and timeless significance." It's edited by Elisabeth Fraser and features some of my favorite digital storytellers, including Shoko Wanger and Erin Boyle. And the design, from creative director Miya Hirabayashi, is so clean and lovely. It's an online space I'm honored to be a part of.

My first essay is about struggling to define myself (and this season) in a time of transition.

"I don’t know what it means yet to claim this place. I catch glimpses maybe — of the New England thing — in katydids and the peeling paint on the front stoop. But I can’t read the sky here. I’m constantly caught without a coat or sweating in my boot-socks.

At home, I knew when the roses bloomed a few weeks early."

You can read the full essay here.

  3. I LOVE the way you write! And I LOVE what you just wrote (and your photos too!) I like to ponder what you said about "losing" and "gaining" because they really are one in the same thing... it's just a matter of us humans accepting this change that seems to come so naturally to other parts of nature. Here in Southern California, it went from 70 degree mornings, to 50 degree mornings. It gets darker earlier, and lighter later. My body is having a hard time adjusting and it seems my whole lifestyle pace is coming to a screeching halt. But it's not at all! It's all about readjustment! I should learn more from my cat, who when it gets chillier on these October nights, simply curls up into a tighter ball...
