Working Title

I've never really listened to that old saying "don't judge a book by it's cover".  I do make assumptions if the design work looks like something out of a made-for-tv movie.

Call me shallow, but I also judge books by their titles.
I can fall for book with out ever reading a page; like The Year of Magical Thinking (Joan Didion)  or What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (Raymond Carver)

There are lots of books that are famous for their first lines "It was the best of the times, it was the worst of times ..." . But, a title is the real first line. A single sentence wrap-up of what is to come in the next hundred-some-odd pages.

If they weren't already taken, Skinny Legs and All (Tom Robbins) and  Limbo: And Other Places I Have Lived  (Lily Tuck) could have been the names of my memoir.

Or, better yet, Girl With the Curious Hair (David Foster Wallace).

Are there any book titles that you just love?

  3. cara : that's one of my favorites too! Even the titles of the short stories are great - "Something that needs nothing"

  4. The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy. It was the cover and the title that sucked me in and, fortunately, it became one of my favorite books!

  5. Molly : isn't that the best? I also fell in loved with A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius that way.
