2012 | in flowers

This year taught me about letting go, which has often been my yearly lesson. Overtime I've grown better at parting with the bad things - resentment and draining relationships. This year was a good year for me, though. I felt content for the first time in my grown-up life, living in studio apartment in Portland with my little sister. Everyday, I had the simple happiness of sharing a life with someone I love.

But, then another kind of happiness came along! I was accepted to graduate school and she got engaged. So we packed up our apartment, and I moved across the country. And it was so very hard to say goodbye to the little life we built together.

looking back, I think 2012 can be summed up best by Ms. Mary Oliver:

"To live in this world, you must be able to do three things:
to love what is mortal
to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it
and, when the times comes to let it go, to let it go."

And, there is nothing that captures that sentiment better than the fleeting beauty of flowers.

flower fields (on film):
the Sauvie Island lavender farm
35 miles of Pear Blossoms
Dahlias and Raspberry picking
Skagit Vally Tulip Festival

more flowers on film:
camellias on my nightstand
window sill wax flowers
narcissus, in winter.

  3. that is absolutely beautiful..

letting go is something i find difficult too.. i got broken up with yesterday, new years eve, via text from someone i had loved and cared for for two years.. this year is my year to feel content and to let go and to put the pieces back together.. and you're right, i think it will be the simplest of things to help heal that.

    happy new year hun xx

    1. oh, Francesca. That's so difficult and disappointing (on a holiday? really, what a jerk!) My actually sister moved-in after my boyfriend moved-out, and you're right. The simple joys - cooking dinner and evening walks - are what gave my day the fullness I thought I lost.

  6. Oh, Sam! These photos are gorgeous. March, June, and July are my favorites. Happy New Year! P.S. Which Mary Oliver collection do you like the best? I own "Why I Wake Early," but am looking for some more of her poetry.
